A Gift from the Nest

The Sailor Bow — a free sewing pattern

A looped bow over two pointed tails, on a hair clip. A tube for the loops, one folded piece with pointed ends for the tails, and a little strip that wraps the middle and holds the whole shape. Every edge is straight.

What's in it

  • Full-size pattern pieces — each one fits on a single sheet, so there is nothing to tape together, and each carries a 1in check square
  • Ten steps with photographs of the bow in the picture being cut, sewn, pinched and wrapped
  • A hair-clip finish — a 2in alligator clip, with an optional fabric cover for the blade
  • One fat quarter of quilting cotton makes one bow, with ¼in seams throughout

A sailor bow looks fussy and isn't: it is a loop, a pair of tails, a few pleats and a strip wound round the middle, and the wrap is what gives it its shape. The one in the photographs is a spider-web print, just in time for October — make yours in whatever you have been saving.

Rather not sew it yourself?

Every piece in the shop is already made, by hand, in San Antonio — and if you'd like this in your own fabric, that's what custom orders are for.
